About the app

Which camera bodies does Scout work with?

25 Canon bodies today, via Canon's CCAPI over Wi-Fi. Sony and Nikon are on the roadmap via different protocols. Within the 25 supported Canon bodies, some don't expose fast event polling (cockpit lags 2–10 s behind the camera), and some don't expose fast library scan (first scan of a large card takes a minute or two, then caches). See the spec for the per-model capability matrix.

Does Scout work without internet?

Yes. Every paid tier includes on-phone AI — Scout's 5-dimension scoring runs fully on your phone with no internet and no Scout Units consumed. The structured Critique is cloud-only because it needs a larger model than your phone can host.

What about iOS and desktop?

Photador Scout is Android-first. iOS is in preparation; a Windows/macOS desktop companion is in development. We'll announce dates on the home page when they're real.

What language is the app and the critique in?

The app, this website, and the AI-generated Critique are all available in English and Norwegian today.

Privacy & your photos

Are my photos sent to the cloud?

Only when you've turned on Cloud AI scoring in Settings. On-phone scoring runs entirely on your phone with no cloud involvement.

What does the cloud do with my photos?

Holds them in memory just long enough to score or critique them, then discards the bytes. Images are not stored, logged, or used to train any model. Read the full Privacy Policy for the details.

Can I use Scout without signing in?

Yes — anonymous mode gives you a one-time 50-unit Scout Cloud allowance, so you can evaluate everything before deciding whether to make an account.

Billing & subscriptions

How does the 7-day trial work?

Seven days of full app access — unlimited paired cameras, unlimited mode profiles, on-phone AI scoring. Cloud scoring and critique are available with a trial usage budget lower than any paid tier — enough to verify they read your photos well before you subscribe. No card required to start.

What are Scout Units?

Scout Units are how Photador Cloud counts the AI work you ask it to do. 1 unit = score a camera thumbnail. 2 units = score the same frame at 10× the resolution. 20 units = full structured Critique on one frame. On-phone AI is unlimited and free on every paid tier.

How do I cancel?

Cancellation goes through Google Play — open the Play Store app → Subscriptions → Photador Scout → Cancel. Your subscription stays active until the end of the period you've already paid for, and any Scout Units left in your monthly allowance remain available until then.

What if I run out of Scout Units mid-month?

Top up 1,000 units for $1.49 from inside the app. Top-ups never expire — they sit alongside your monthly allowance and get used after it.

VAT and local taxes?

Google Play handles local-currency conversion and applicable VAT at checkout, based on your country.

Performance

How accurate is the AI scoring?

We measure it continuously against a frontier teacher model on an internal benchmark of thousands of real frames, each scored multiple times by the teacher. The on-phone model currently lands within ±1 star of the teacher on about 86% of frames. The cloud model's calibration sits at the teacher's own repeat-scoring agreement level, and the 10×-resolution pass catches roughly 4 in 5 technically flawed frames while wrongly rejecting fewer than 1 in 20. Where the models still trail the teacher is in ranking fine differences in noise and subject framing — exactly what the higher-resolution cloud pass is for.

Why is Pro / Studio so much faster?

Two reasons. First, your scoring calls run on RTX 5080 inference pods rather than the RTX 5060 Ti pods that serve Starter and Plus — the 5080 is about 2.6× faster per call. Second, Pro and Studio sessions can run multiple scoring calls in parallel; Starter and Plus run them one at a time. Together that's about 4× faster on Pro and 8× faster on Studio for batch-style work.

How does USB batch mode help?

When you've shot a lot of frames, plugging the camera into your phone over USB pulls the whole set off the camera much faster than Wi-Fi can. The cloud then takes over to score them.

In the field

Does Scout delete from the camera card?

Yes — when you mark a frame for deletion in the Gallery, the delete writes through to the camera card. The frames you keep arrive at your edit station already triaged.

Can I write Scout's star ratings back to the camera?

Yes — Scout writes the rating back to the image file on the camera card, so the metadata travels with the file into Lightroom, Capture One, DxO, or wherever you edit.

Account & data

How do I delete my account?

In-app: Settings → Account → Delete account. We erase the row within 30 days. Email privacy@photador.com for a copy of your data before you delete.

What happens to my saved profiles and paired cameras if I downgrade?

Nothing gets deleted. All your saved profiles and paired cameras stay functional. New writes (a 9th paired camera on Plus, say) get blocked at the source until you upgrade or unpair.
